The Big Breakfast – 2000 kids being fed!
Posted on April 12, 2013 by admin in Feed the Kids, Hone Harawira, Media Advisory, Press ReleasesMedia Advisory – Media are advised that on Wednesday 17th April from 9 am to 12 noon at Ngāti Otara Park, Auckland, MANA is hosting over 2000 children from ten local kura, primary and intermediate schools for “The Big Breakfast”. Sporting, film and television celebrities will be there to help serve breakfast, alongside community and parent volunteers, and students will be entertained by a line-up including the JGeeks, DZIAH Dance Crew, and rapper Tyree, with Meryl Cassie as MC.
The event is to raise awareness of the issue of child poverty and hunger, and to help build public support for MANA Leader Hone Harawira’s Feed the Kids Bill to introduce breakfast and lunch programmes in low-decile schools.
Around 80,000 New Zealand children go to school hungry each day which impacts on their health and their ability to learn. Many schools, businesses, charitable organisations, communities, and whānau are already working together to feed their kids but government needs to do more to ensure that all children are fed and able to learn”, says Mr Harawira.
The Bill is due to come before Parliament for first reading in June, 2013.
Media wanting to attend are advised to register with Malcolm Mulholland on 027 765 6380.
