Rugby World Cup minister Mc Cully must guarantee people’s safety

MANA leader Hone Harawira said RWC minister Murray Mc Cully failed to provide adequate security for waka crews at the RWC launch, and is backing calls from Waka organizer Pereniki Tauhara for an apology and compensation for injuries suffered and damage to the waka.

“Some of my constituents were hospitalised after being assaulted by drunks down at the waterfront last week” said Harawira. “I asked for a meeting with the Minister to get assurances that a proper investigation would be carried out and that there would be no repeat of the incident.”

“McCully hasn’t even given me the courtesy of a reply, which is an insult to hundreds of people who gave up weeks of their time to train for an event that was a highlight of the opening night”

Harawira said that he hoped there wouldn’t be a repeat after this weekend’s All Blacks versus France game in the city, but expressed bitter disappointment with the Minister’s refusal to respond to the call for a meeting to deal with the concerns.
