Te Hamua to do ice challenge so others can survive cancer too
Posted on July 10, 2014 by admin in Media AdvisoryAt noon tomorrow in the Kaiti Mall in Gisborne, Te Hamua Nikora, MANA candidate for Ikaroa Rawhiti, is taking on the ice challenge to raise awareness of the importance of getting regular health checks for testicular cancer and raise funds for the Cancer Society.
A past survivor of testicular and brain cancer, Te Hamua has invited all those supporting his cause to bring a bucket of ice and a gold coin koha to the mall. He will complete the challenge with a drink of locally produced Divine Kawakawa.
“I put off getting tested for four years, even though I knew something was up. It was scary getting tested, scary getting treatment – and going through chemotherapy was one of the scariest things I’ve ever had to go through. So I can’t stress enough to all the tāne out there, please man up and get regular checks.”
“Our whanau need us to stay healthy for them.”
“I’m hoping to raise a really solid koha for the Cancer Society. They do such a great job and were there all the way to help me out when I needed them.”
MANA is advocating for free doctors’ visits for all ages to ensure full access to regular health check-ups.
When: 12 noon, Friday 11 July
Where: Kaiti Mall, Gisborne, outside MANA office
All media welcome.
