Talley’s: The Fresh Name in Screwing Workers
Posted on April 4, 2012 by admin in Hone Harawira, Press ReleasesThe current slogan for Talley’s is ‘The Name in the Freezer’. I’ve got a new one for them: ‘Talley’s: The Fresh Name in Screwing Workers’” says MANA Leader Hone Harawira.
Workers in AFFCO plants in Northland, Auckland, Hamilton, Te Puke, Wairoa, Feilding and Whanganui are on strike in a show of solidarity with the 1000 workers who have been locked out since February. Talley’s is now locking out workers over the Easter weekend, meaning Talley’s gets away with not having to pay them statutory holidays.
“I’ve called on MANA branches to get behind the AFFCO workers and their whanau who are being treated like slaves by Talley’s by organising food drives. I encourage the public to do likewise. Easter is supposed to be a time of giving. The only thing Talley’s are giving their workers over Easter is pain and suffering”.
“AFFCO strikers can take heart from the struggle involving the Ports of Auckland workers. While their fight is not over, the mood of the nation is against corporates hiring workers with no fixed hours per week. Talley’s might want to take note of who is winning that battle before they face the wrath of the public. Maybe all workers should return the favour and start ‘starving’ Talley’s at the supermarket checkout. I certainly won’t be buying or eating their fish, frozen veges or their ‘guilt-free’ ice cream until they stop trying to bully workers into accepting less than satisfactory working conditions”.
