Trespass Notice issued against MANA members
Posted on December 6, 2011 by admin in Annette Sykes, Press ReleasesA trespass notice has been issued by the Auckland City Council against those who are a part of, or associated with, MANA.
Other organisations named include Occupy Auckland, Unite Trade Union and Legalise Cannabis. The notice is in relation to Aotea Square. An injunction to nullify the notice is being heard at the Auckland District Court at 10 am on Wednesday 7th December.
MANA President Annette Sykes calls upon the Auckland City Council to recognise the number of human rights being contravened with the issuing of this notice.
She says “The right to protest is a long-standing right that most democracies recognise as being healthy for the development of their nation. MANA supports the “Occupy” campaign, a worldwide movement that is questioning the massive imbalance between the rich and the poor and who are putting the corrupt intent of capitalism under the microscope. MANA is a political movement that is free to associate with other organisations that share common goals and objectives.
Why are trespass notices not being issued against the University of Auckland whose lecturers are protesting or the Greens who some of the occupiers support
This is a blatant act of discrimination against MANA by the Auckland City Council”.
“I urge the Council to withdraw the notice before people start accusing them of being heavy-handed. This type of behaviour is of extreme concern. Our country”s largest council sees fit to persecute those whose rights are protected under the law. I also encourage the Auckland District Court to ensure that a proper and full hearing is undertaken. With so many rights under attack by the Auckland District Council it is important that our legal system sends a clear message that this action will not be tolerated in the 21st century”.
