Mana moves to clarify industrial relations policy

MANA has moved quickly to make it clear the party does not support compulsory trade unionism as stated by the New Zealand Herald newspaper this morning.

MANA spokesperson John Minto says the mistake in the Herald took MANA’s support for nationally negotiated industry agreements as indicating support for compulsory unions.

“There is no compulsion in saying that if workers want to gain the benefits of those agreements they should join a union which was party to the negotiation.”

Mr Minto says also the Herald has left off MANA’s call to have the minimum wage pegged at two-thirds of the average wage and instead said the party would like it to be $17 after 2 years.

“In fact it would be close to $17 in the second year but more importantly it needs to move with the average wage so that those on the lowest wage don’t drop back further again in the future.”
