Burning the flag or accepting the evil
Posted on July 24, 2014 by admin in Hone Harawira, Press ReleasesBurning the Israeli flag in Auckland in protest over the murder of innocent civilians in Gaza is nothing to be ashamed of” said MANA Leader and Tai Tokerau MP, Hone Harawira. “Calling for both sides to stand down when one side is annihilating the other though, IS something to be ashamed of.”
“On one side you have a state with nuclear weapons, tanks, artillery, fighter planes, helicopter gunships, warships, a fully operational army, and the best missile defence system in the world that has killed hundreds of innocent civilians, displaced more than 100,000 people, and destroyed the infrastructure of the people in Gaza, in the last couple of weeks.”
“On the other side you have kids with rocks, and irregulars with rockets who have killed 2 civilians.”
“Martin Luther King once said, He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”
“Israel has committed a monstrous evil by its massacre of innocent civilians. MANA refuses to passively accept that evil and chooses to protest against it, and if that protest involves burning a mere flag, then so be it.”
“Those condemning the burning of the flag might want to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves what it is that they are doing to protest against the massacre in Gaza.”

David Sterling says:
Post Author July 24, 2014 at 4:16 pmIt would be nice when taking a stand such as this to see just a small amount of balance. To call Hamas a few kids with rocks and irregulars with rockets is ridiculous. They are a well organised, extremist organisation armed by Iran with tens of thousands of rockets, arms of all kinds and a doctrine that calls for the total destruction of Israel. They encourage civilians to die for the cause and they treat women like property.
Hone, I like straight talking politicians but to jump on this bandwagon without showing at least a small amount of understanding of the situation is shameful. Your comments on TV the other night showed that you personally have no depth of knowledge of the situation there and so you tagged along to try and pull in a few votes.
I feel gutted cos I was planning to vote Mana.

It is they who want you to believe that it is hamas, who are governed by the americans, who just happen to be the largest financial aid supporters of “israel” ask yourself why the americans are so involved there??????

Post Author July 25, 2014 at 9:37 amPalestinians are now known as Gazans, because they were kicked out of their homelands, and are now living mainly on the Gaza strip, where the “israelis” are bombing the heck out of them……IT IS THE ISRAELIS WHO ARE BEING FINANCIALLY BACKED BY AMERICA…..WHY?????THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!
David Sterling says:
Post Author July 25, 2014 at 4:25 pmActually kelz that is not how the history looks at all. Both Arabs and Jews lived in the land for thousands of years. In fact it is a place where each has slaughtered the other, including some of the worst by Christians, since the beginning of time.
There never has existed a Palestine that was ruled by Palestinians ever. It got it’s name from the British and it was ruled before that by the Ottoman empire.
Gaza was conquered from the Egyptians and occupied by Israel until 2005. When they handed it over to Fatah in that year it was the first time in history that the Palestinian people could rule themselves. Unfortunately Yasser Arafat was too busy filling his bank account to focus on the people so out of discontent they elected Hamas to rule.
It is a fact that there are less people dying there today than ever before in the history of that land.
I lived there for some time, both in Israel and the west bank working with aid agencies. I spoke at length to both peoples. I hate seeing innocents killed but I also hate the way the history changes to suit the fact that people need a simple foe rather than looking at the full picture.
BTW the Middle East is the most brutal neighbourhood in the world. Look at how Israel’s neighbours massacre each other in the name of their religion and try and imagine how the Israelis are supposed to solve things without bloodshed at all.
I constantly ask myself why people expect more from Israelis than from everyone else in the middle east.

When? At the time when the leader of the Palestinian people was busy being Hitler’s BFF and vocally advocating the Final Solution, and encouraging the Nazis to kill Jewish children rather than let them end up in countries from which they might end up in Palestine later? During the 1920 Palestine riots, the 1929 Hebron massacre and so on? Or before Zionism even existed, when they were killing Jews of the Old Yishuv movement just for being Jews?
At what point were they willingly taking in Jewish refugees? Please, give us more details about how welcoming the Palestinian people were to the idea of coexistence with the Jewish people.
Also, this “historic land of the Palestines” is also the historical land of the Jewish people. Both peoples should have the inalienable right to live there peacefully, and if that option had been on the cards, quite a few million lives could have been saved, considering that early on, Hitler was quite willing to let Jews leave peacefully rather than kill them, but of course the Palestinians who you claim welcomed their refugees actually wanted to see them dead, and much of the rest of the world did it’s usual thumb-twiddling “refugees are not my problem”.
Your rewrite of history is fascinating, as is the notion that Hamas is an American plot and *insert media conspiracy here*.

Our Much Loved Nikola Tesla summed it up nicely about humans natural conflicting nature and how best to help each other with it by sharing our thoughts and facts as freely as possible…..
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
“Fights between individuals, as well as governments and nations, invariably result from misunderstandings in the broadest interpretation of this term. Misunderstandings are always caused by the inability of appreciating one another’s point of view. This again is due to the ignorance of those concerned, not so much in their own, as in their mutual fields. The peril of a clash is aggravated by a more or less predominant sense of combativeness, posed by every human being. To resist this inherent fighting tendency the best way is to dispel ignorance of the doings of others by a systematic spread of general knowledge. With this object in view, it is most important to aid exchange of thought and intercourse.”

Israel gave the Sinai back to Egypt back in the 80′s so that they could be at peace, that place had plenty of oil so that might show that oil doesn’t motivate all conflicts.

The name palestine came from the British who took over the rule of the middle east from the Ottoman Turkish empire in 1920, just after WW1. Before that one can not find any mentioning of palestine. You can find this fact in libraries all over the world. The Gaza Arabs would let us believe they are related to the Philistines which were a NON-Arab ancient people who came from…hold it…the island of Crete. But these got completely wiped out in battle by the Kingdom of Israel, thousands of years ago. Study history!

The Gazan people should not suffer so horribly because of their despicable government, but at the same time, it’s a shame that you only feel the urge to condemn violence when it’s done against people that you like.

Post Author July 24, 2014 at 8:11 pmWell in political terms there isn’t a heck of a difference between the two – one wants an “Islamic” and one wants a “Jewish” state in an area that is the home of many communities- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Druze and others.
But in terms of the civilians, why aren’t the “Gaza” civilians allowed to take refugee in Israel; 95% of them were either born in Israel or are the children and grandchildren of the non-Jewish Israelis from Haifa, Beersheba – they are from central and southern Israel, just they have been stuck on the Gaza beach since they were driven there between 1947 and 1953? That is the issue for the international community during a humanitarian crisis – let the “Gazan” civilians live in their homeland, which is called Israel these days.
It is clear to anyone to see Israeli political parties will never ever permit a “Palestinian state” (in Palestine West Bank/Jerusalem/Gaza) – that just means the civilians (non Jewish civilians) need to non violently campaign for their rights within their Sovereign ruler – the State of Israel.

I claim that the people of Palistine have the right to (a) defend themselves against an aggressor who is not only illegally occupying their land but continues to rule their lives and (b) attack that aggressor in order to regain their lands. Peace would be a simple matter for the people of Palistine if Israel withdrew from the lands it illegally occupies and the people of Plastine would no longer have any need to fight anymore for it’s return. Consequently, I have a made a sizable donation to the Mana Party for their efforts on my behalf and to be able to continue this great work in the future.

Read up about his relationship with the Nazis.
It’s ironic since Hamas wants to destroy Israel and kill millions of Jews, that you feel that they are the Jews in this particular analogy.
Also, I suspect your definition of what the word Zionist means is rather akin to how an anti-feminist defines feminism as man-hating. One can be a pro-Palestinian anti-occupation Zionist who feels that Palestine has just as much a right to exist as Israel.

Post Author July 27, 2014 at 10:32 amVery pleased to see the Mana Party represented at the protest action against Israel and it’s massacre of the Palestinian People. Interesting to read the religious comment and I would humbly suggest that prayer is useless without action.
Of course we all know from the biblical stories that at one time God was supposed to have given parts of this land to Moses and then because of the sins of the Jews gave it back to the original People Of Palestine and scattered the Jews wide and far.
However, God seems to mean nothing to the powers of the ‘West’ who decided that the Jews should be allowed back into part of this land and these Countries, dominated by England, France and the USA, in consequence made refugees of 100 of thousands of Palestinian People to accommodated these Jews in spite of God’s ‘Word”. These people who now form the relatively recent State of Israel also seem to ignore the God of their heritage as they more recently took by force even more land than they had originally occupied from the ‘West’. They now not only refuse to give up this land ‘illegally’ occupied but bomb and massacre the People they stole it off when these People try to get it back.
The Israeli massacre of the Palestinian People is not only ‘evil’ it is very sad.
I pray for the Palestinian People and this is one of the activities I have been led to take. Cheers Ron Smythe.

Seems like a long bow to draw to say that was God giving the land back to the Palestinians.
There were no Palestinians at that point anyway, you may be thinking of the ancient Philistines?
People go to great lengths to try to find ways to make the Jewish presence in Israel illegitimate. That is actually at the core of the conflict there because no Palestinian “peace” partner as ever gone as far as acknowledging the right for Israel to exist at all.
The Palestinians have been failed by their either greedy or extremist leadership and treated like slave labour by all the Arab regimes in the world.
How is it that Egypt, Saudi and UAE can publically state that Hamas is the instigator and yet no lefty Kiwi can bring themselves to lay any blame there at all?
Anti-Semitic sentiment such as yours leads to crimes against humanity too. You can pray all you like Ron but you are not a peace lover as such and your God knows that about you.

Post Author July 29, 2014 at 1:05 pmSo Hone Harawira, firebrand MANA Movement Leader and Tai Tokerau MP, recklessly burns the Israeli flag in Auckland in protest over the murder of innocent civilians in Gaza, and then goes on to swaggeringly state that his symbolic, politically imbalanced, reckless act of contempt is “nothing to be ashamed of” and then declares, “Calling for both sides to stand down when one side is annihilating the other IS something to be ashamed of.”
Now that’s the politics of division being writ large in our country by an opportunist political man who is looking to aggrandize himself, and his Movement, by taking a public stand as an unequivocal supporter of HAMAS, the militant arm of the Islamic Brotherhood, and converting the grotesque human tragedy unfolding in Gaza to some kind of electoral advantage in New Zealand today. His appeal is to the majority of humane, compassionate, peace-loving Kiwis who are outraged at the high cost in civilian lives of the Gaza conflict today, and he perhaps has a wether eye on courting the Moslem migrant community’s vote.
Any politician, any party or self-styled “Movement” who plays the politics of division in New Zealand and acts bombastically like some kind of Wannabe Palestinian jihadi extremist—any politician or party or “Movement” that conducts such a blatant display of anti-semitism deserves our close, critical scrutiny. Of course you are free to choose to frame Harawira’s behaviour as “thinly veiled” anti-semitism or symbolic opposition to the Israeli government, not the Jews as an ethnic group. However if you choose to interpret Harawira’s flag-burning act with maximum charity, in the light of his unequivocal statement of support for HAMAS, a militant anti-semitic organization, that means lending charity to Harawira’s behaviour is morally confused and your charity has been mis-directed.
Harawira, Mana, plays politics with current events in the Middle East like some sort of sordid Pantomime in a public park in our peaceful country. Harawira, Mana, your ridiculous, amateur theatre hanky-panky has sought our nations attention, the world’s attention and earned our utmost derision. Shame on you, you have debased the very meaning of the word mana.
Mana, I’m an old boy of Mana College, and my father was a teacher there, Mana the school motto of Mana is, need I tell you, “Akona te Mahi Pai”. It is a really, really good motto to live your life by “Do the right thing” and of course it is the very definition of how to go about conducting yourself in life with mana.
Mana, Mr Harawira, if the answer is “burn an Israeli flag in a public park and declare unequivocal support for HAMAS and unmitigated opposition to Israel” what the hell was the question? Doing the right thing was clearly not even on the table when you considered doing this. Either apologise for your vile theatrical turn and retract your statement aligning yourself with HAMAS or drop the use of the “Mana” name, your continued use of it sullies the very word, shame on you.
Wiremu says:
Post Author July 29, 2014 at 8:01 pmIf the opposition to the slow motion genocide in Gaza expressed by Hone is not in line with your views then please disassociate yourself from Mana and go where your bias is welcome.
I too support Hamas, as I would support a resistance movement in Nazi occupied Europe, or Apartheid south Africa, East Timor, Guatamala, El Salvador and so on. Israel has in fact acted against the oppressed people in nearly all these countries, exporting its terror in support of its biggest cheerleader, the USA.
Hamas is not intent on destroying Israel. It’s offer to recognise the Jewish state in 2006 was rejected. I understand that some of you commenting have a limited grasp of history; this is unsurprising given the propoganda Israel is so adept at using to perpetrate it’s unmitigated thuggery.
For those interested in active, non-violent resistance here in Aoteoroa, please google Boycott Israeli Goods. A campaign to refuse entry to this country to Israeli travelers ( excluding Refuseniks ) until such time as the Israeli people renounce violence by electing a Government who will recognise Palestinian rights is something also being mooted.
I think Hone does understand the meaning of the word mana. He understood it during this countries opposition to the apartheid regime, and he understands it today with respect to the atrocities being committed in Gaza by the Israeli military thugs.
Kia Kaha Hone.
David Sterling says:
Post Author July 29, 2014 at 9:15 pmHamas offering to recognise Israel in 2006 is fiction. It didn’t happen. Their charter calls for death of all non Muslims and a caliphate for the whole world. They openly say that to achieve their aims they are willing to martyr their people.
Israel has made big mistakes in the peace process but at least they embarked on one with the PA. Hamas slaughtered the PA and Fatah in Gaza in 2007.
You should go there Wiremu to get a real understanding of the place. It’s 5000 years of one side slaughtering the other, Christians, Jews, Muslims. The South African history only went back a few hundred years. There is no easy answer here and changing the history won’t help solve anything.

Post Author August 27, 2014 at 9:08 amThe Hamas supporters on this thread obviously have no idea about the reality in Israel/Gaza.
Wiremu, Jewish people are the most self-critical you will find. You obviously haven’t heard the saying that where there are two Jews, there will be three opinions. That quote from self-hating Jew, Ilan Pappe, is ridiculous in the face of the world-wide criticism Israel faces, but does serve to highlight the fact the Jewish opinion is so diverse. What you guys are missing is that Israel is a democratic country with all the checks and balances of a pluralistic society. Israelis, Arab and Jew alike, are able to hold diverse opinions and express them openly. Not so, in Gaza. Any dissent in Gaza is met with punishment, often summary execution. There is no room for discussion or debate.
Hamas supporters really need to read the Hamas charter and listen to Hamas leaders to understand where they are coming from. This conflict is not about occupation, apartheid or land. For Hamas it is about one thing, annihilation of the Jews. It is motivated by one thing, hatred of the Jews. Hamas has stated that they do not want peace, they do not want co-existence with Jews. This is a fight between a modern democratic nation that values freedom and life, and a medieval, barbaric movement that values death and martyrdom.
If the Holocaust has taught Jewish people anything, it is this: when a maniacal leader declares he wants to kill the Jews, believe him. Hamas has stated clearly that this is their intention. To support Hamas is to support the attempted genocide of the Jewish people. There is no mana in Hamas.
