Kia ora taatou,

We are pleased to finally announce the confirmed arrangements for the Waka Ama Flotilla event coming up this weekend.

Name of Event : WAKA AMA FLOTILLA

Date : Sunday 12th May 2013

Kaupapa :
The current political environment in New Zealand is such that Maori are concerned over the proposed sale of New Zealand Assets including Mighty River Power, Genesis Energy and Meridian Energy and the focus has been on the Waikato River. One suggestion that has gained traction is the idea of a Waka Flotilla being deployed on the Waikato River to raise awareness on the issue and to register with future generations that our Maori people were despondent with the sale. An open invitation is now extended to Waka Ama paddlers throughout the country to join the Waka Ama Flotilla in a peaceful protest.

Launch : Will take place at 9am from Grantham Street boat ramp, Hamilton. It will include a Waka Teetee and at least 4 double hulled Waka Ama which are available for paddlers of mixed gender and from all levels of fitness. For extra safety, experienced steerers will be provided on each Waka. A brief stop over will take place at Pukete boat ramp to enable relief paddlers to change over if necessary and to continue the journey to The Point in Ngaruawahia. Life jackets and paddles will be provided and a safety boat will accompany the Waka Ama Flotilla. The length of the journey will take approximately 3 hours. Estimated arrival at the Point is 12 o’clock.

Paddlers must provide their own : Towel, water bottle, change of clothes and a wairua pai. All paddlers must also make their own arrangements to be picked up from Ngaruawahia.
