Davis backs National

Davis backs National

“I wonder whether Phil Goff knows what Kelvin’s up to?” said Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira, on being asked whether he knew that Labour’s Kelvin Davis was promoting the Maori Party, instead of Labour policy.

“Mind you, I don’t suppose Kelvin told Goff that he was backing Shane Jones for the leadership either,” said Harawira.

Harawira’s comments follow revelations that Davis had advised Maori to vote for the Maori Party if they weren’t going to vote for him.

“As ACT disappears from sight and National slips in the polls, John Key will be looking to the Maori Party to shore up his government’s plans to cut benefits, cut wages, and sell off state assets to fund their mate’s irrigation projects” said Harawira “and the only one who will vote with them on those issues is the Maori Party”

“So even though Phil Goff will be furious with his backbencher from the north for promoting National’s coalition partner, John Key will be rubbing his hands with glee”

Harawira thought it might be a private deal to repay John Key for backing Davis during the by-election “but this election is supposed to be a contest of candidates and policies, not a promotional campaign for the enemy”

“I’m standing on my record as the independent voice for Tai Tokerau in parliament, as the only party leader in the contest, and as the representative of the only party with policies focused on uplifting te pani me te rawakore – the poor and the dispossessed”

“I’m proud of that and I wouldn’t sell it out for anything or anyone”
